I dont know if this has been addressed...

I would think we need to make a simple priority of scope for the application that will help us determine the path to take when issues arise...

These are my thoughts (feel free to change it as you feel, we just gotta start somewhere)

Priority Features:
Speed - This application needs to be designed to be as fast as possible
Simplicity of User Interface - One thing, we are looking to create a nice clean, simple application
help me out with some....

Standard Features:
help me out with some....

Secondary Features:
Plugin System - Ability to have plugins developed to be attached to the application to extend its functionality from the current version.
help me out with some....

Just to clear up, basically this is a priority list.
A feature that is a Secondary Feature, will not be implemented if it violates a Standard Feature or Priority Feature.

For example, implementing a Plugin System (Secondary Feature) cannot be implemented if it completely slows the application down, thus violating the Priority Feature list.

Does this make sense?

I see exactly where you're coming from, and although we hadn't classified anything like that, at least not officially, it does make a lot of sense.

Just my initial thoughts - please feel free to criticise, comment, or whatever. Maybe I have my own ideas wrong about what we want EE to be...

Priority Features
Speed
Simplicity of UI
Actual editing ability
Unicode support
Syntax highlighting

Standard Features:
Syntax highlighting builder (UI for designing new syntaxes)
Regular expression support in find/replace

Secondary Features:
Autocomplete
Calculator
Macro recorder/player

Great...
I was thinking we needed some sort of feature guide.  Something that tells us if we can perform with moving forward on a feature, only as long as it does follow the previous guidelines...

A feature list might be handy, actually. I'm already looking to add a bug feature in fairly soon, and I'm wondering how much functionality I can scavenge from it.

Failing that, I can always write such a feature, although that'll take me a few days to put together, especially to ensure it is secured.

Exactly what sort of functionality are we looking for in a feature reference? Does anyone have any URLs for something similar they can point me to, so I know exactly what I'm trying to write?
