I guess it had to happen eventually, but I've just seen the first actual spam posting here on this forum. (It is also magically deleted, but we won't go into that)

Hopefully it won't get worse... but let's wait and see.

I saw that over the RSS feed. I went to delete it, but I could not access the forums. The site seemed to be down at the time.

There were issues last night with the server; basically I performed some maintenance and due to a collision of several unpleasant random events the server was offline for about 3 hours (and would not even boot properly).

All fixed now though. (I have deleted the latest spam post, but I think I'm going to have to look at something better at stopping them)

There were several more spam messages posted recently. I'll remove them as I see them, but I don't have the moderation privilege to ban users. Or if I do, I don't know how to do it.

Phil is now an administrator on the forum, allowing both topic removal and banning rights (previously only defined as moderator to remove topics in the area under which he was defined as a moderator)

I just banned several spammers and removed their posts. I am also learning how do to this more quickly so I can spend less time per day dealing with the issue. Hopefully the bans will be enough to stop the recent flow of spam onto the forums.

Hi Phil,

It looks like you've missed 6 spam postings by nena002 and arros123   Shocked

They probably posted after I cleaned things up. I've taken care of them now.

What is going on? There is spam all over the place. Is this a security issue?

I don't know. Fortunately, I can deal with it quickly, but it is annoying they keep coming back with new accounts. Maybe they got a program that can solve the registration captcha if there is one. I have looked through the admin settings, but I don't see anything to do with captchas.

There is a captcha but it's not the strongest in the world. But these are smarter bots, definitely - they're not only breaking the captcha but they're also receiving an activation email and hitting the link in it.

What is the fix? Replace the pictures with better ones?
