A good IDE would be wxdevcpp. its a fork of devcpp but with a built in form editor for wxwidgets and it is being actively maintained, unlike devcpp.

Also comes preconfigured with wxwidgets ready to compile under VS2k5 or mingw

Sweet.  With something like this available, I might be encouraged to give it a shot myself.

Is there up-to-date information about how somebody would get started in EE development?  I have never done any OSS community development before, so I don't quite understand what to do.  There may be others out there who also would like to try, but don't know where to start.

Could somebody point us in the right direction?

@Pvt_Ryan
Did you try to compile current EE with this?

No but if the thought is to use wxwidgets then this is perfect as it works and was the only way i could get wxwidgets to compile.

Sounds like a plan.

I believe we did briefly consider rewriting CE's calls to MFC to point at wxWidgets a bit back so this really would push in the right direction.

I haven't tried yet because I've been sticking with editing files using CE and compiling using g** for all my coding needs, but does anyone know how NetBeans works with wxWidgets at all?

NetBeans is an IDE for Java. wxWidgets is a C++ library. I don't think they would mix at all.

Oh, I know that. What some people don't know is that NB (along with eclipse) has C/C++ extension plugins, which I have installed. So I'm sure if eclipse can load it, then NB will be fine.

Oops. I didn't realize NB had this.
